Newsletter of the Burlington Chess Club

April 1998

Editor: Trevor Varley

Editor's Note:

I have had to keep this issue down to a two page document due to some time constraints placed on me by business commitments.

Hans Jung visits our club

Last week, March 25th, we enjoyed the visit of Canadian Master Hans Jung from Toronto. He put on a great display of chess in a simultaneous exhibition and gave up only one draw in his efforts against fifteen club members. The (one and only) Ray Stonkus was the one who managed to hold Hans to a half point. Yours truly was crushed quickly in the opening and offered mere token resistance as a means of saving face. Apart from Ray, members who seemed to show respectably, as far as I could determine in quick glances, were Al Zakrajsek, Henry Moors, Ron Puschke, Maurice Harvey and Derek Reynolds. If you would like to see Ray's effort, check out the games page.

New webmaster

Kerry Liles has kindly offered to take over the task of keeping our Internet website current. He is a professional computer man and designing web pages is his domain. I appreciate his offer because I feel that the site should be kept up-to-date and I have had difficulty in doing that due to my commitments. I know that Kerry will give us a sight to be proud of. The address of the web page is unchanged.

Membership directory

Suggestions have been put forth to the effect that it might be a good idea to publish a membership list with the appropriate information such as your name, address, phone number and current rating so that members can contact each other outside of club hours if they wish to do so for purposes of arranging games or rescheduling postponed matches etc. We have decided to do this - if for any reason, such as unlisted numbers or simply that you do not wish to be included in the directory, please notify Derek Reynolds within the next couple of weeks of your wishes. We will assume that your silence is agreement to be so included. Since current ratings will be provided for those members who wish to play against someone in their own skill level, it will mean that the directory will have to be updated regularly (perhaps once every couple of months).

Announcing new club tournament

The second event of the year in the club championship series commences next week i.e. April 8th, 1998. It will consist of five rounds with the time control of Sudden Death in 2 hours. We remind all prospective particpants that CFC membership is a requirement. The CFC membership fee, which is payable on the first evening of the event, is $40.00 If you are not a member of our Federation but wish to join, here is your opportunity. The tournament will continue for five consecutive weeks. Arrangements can sometimes be made with your opponents to reschedule your match if circumstances such as illness or job situations arise. We encourage some of our newer members to have a go at the competitive side of the game. It can be a lot of fun. Don't worry, we can look after pairing you up with players of similar skill levels for the most part. The event will start sharp at 7.30 p.m. so if you are intending to participate please be at the club by no later than 7.15 p.m !

Welcome new members

Over the last few weeks and certainly since our last newsletter we have had an influx of new members. I would like to take this opportunity of officially welcoming some of them to the club. They are: Greg Murphy, David Paadmeister, Russell Craig, Peter Eldridge, Charles Clayton, Troy Chak, Henry Moors, Robert Kontenis, Tom Boschler and Pat Doyle. Please forgive me if I have omitted your name. I know that there are other new members who I have not mentioned here and it is due to the rushing around I have been doing lately and not due to any lack of concern for your membership. Derek Reynolds, our membership chairman and I are trying to get our records up-to-date so that we can keep track of these things.

Continuous activity

I would like to answer a recent question regarding the club's summer activities. We do continue to operate througout the summer. The only break we take is during the Christmas and New Year period. As a matter of fact, on this page you will note the year's second quarter calendar and in the next newsletter or so we will include the third quarter calendar. Please make a note somewhere of the events that interest you. Despite our best efforts to offer an organized approach to the club's upcoming weeks, I get constant questions as to when the next tournament is etc. Please do make a note of the events somewhere. We will try to stick rigidly to the calendar.

Second quarter club calendar

Here is the calendar of events for the period April 1 - June 24th inclusive. Plan accordingly!

I would like to refer to the June 17th date. If you are interested in representing the club in matches against other cities please let Ray or Trevor know. All rating levels are eligible. We will arrange matches against similar strength opponents so there is no need to worry about being paired against much stronger players.

CFC membership

You will see and hear constant reference to CFC membership. You must be a member to enrol in recognized and rated tournaments even within the club. Annual adult rate is $40.00 which includes 'En Passant' magazine six times per year.

We encourage newer members to join. See the link to the Chess Federation of Canada at the bottom of this page.
