Club Schedule for 2008 Calendar Year

Welcome to a new year of CFC rated tournaments at Canada’s friendliest chess club.
The tournament formats are varied to accommodate people who cannot commit to coming out four or five weeks in a row.

“Slow” chess games will be played at a time control of SD 90min for the first game only and SD 105min for all remaining games in the tournament.
Start time (clocks started) for all SD 105min games is 7:15 P.M.

There is a $3.00 CFC rating fee per tournament for each player and players must be CFC members.

As always, casual players and non-CFC members are welcome anytime. They should arrange their own games.
On nights between tournaments we sometimes organize an impromptu non-rated speed tournament.
All may join in these.

Note: the schedule has been adjusted to account for switching to Tuesday nights as of Februray 26th, 2008.


January 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6: Club Championship Tournament 5 round slow chess Swiss, one game per night. Byes available rounds 1 thru 4.
February 13: Casual chess or impromptu non-rated speed tournament.
March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1, 8, 15: Winter Closeout Tournament 5 round slow chess. Top 6 rated entrants play a round robin. Remaining entrants play a round robin, a double round robin or a Swiss (depending on number of players) in order to garner 5 or 6 games.
April 22, 29: Spring Active Tournament 7 to 11 round round robin Active chess (SD 30). 3 games per night max.
May 6, 13, 20, 27, June 3: Spring Swiss Tournament 5 round slow chess Swiss. Byes available rounds 1 thru 4.
June 10 thru September 2: No scheduled CFC rated tournaments. Club will remain open for casual play.
September 9, 16, 23, October 7, 14: Autumn Tournament 5 round slow chess. Top 6 rated entrants play a round robin. Remaining entrants play a round robin, a double round robin or a Swiss (depending on number of players) in order to garner 5 or 6 games.
October 15: Autumn tournament spillover, casual chess etc.
October 21, 28, November 4, 11, 18: Willi Wettengl Memorial Tournament 5 round slow chess Swiss, one game per night. Byes available rounds 1 thru 4.
November 25: Casual chess etc.
December 2, 9, 16: Christmas Countdown Active 7 to 9 round round robin Active chess (SD 30). 3 games per night max.

Information for Public School and High School Players

The Chess Express organizes regular children's tournaments in the Guelph, Cambridge and Burlington areas. Each month there is a tournament at the Guelph University, in Cambridge Mall and at Tansley Woods Recreation Centre in Burlington. These tournaments are open to any youths from Kindergarten to Grade 12/OAC and offer kids a chance to practice and hone their chess skills as their ability develops.
